Founded in 1823, the city of Decatur is the county seat of Macon County and is rich in history!
Abraham Lincoln settled here with his family just west of our town in 1830. There are a number of statues of Lincoln located here and we are proud of the fact that Lincoln gave his first political speech right here in Decatur. Lincoln made frequent stops in Decatur while serving as a lawyer on the 8th Judicial Circuit
On May 9 and 10, 1860, the Illinois Republican State Convention was held right here in Decatur and this is where Lincoln received his first endorsement for President of the United States as "The Rail Splitter Candidate."
Decatur has a rich history in the manufacturing sector and has been the home to many great companies including Archer Daniels Midland "ADM" . ADM has it's corporate world headquarters located right here. ADM is the leading agricultural processor and ethanol producer in the world! It's been called "The supermarket to the world" with good reason!
Caterpillar, is located here, as is Mueller Company and Tate & Lyle (previously A. E. Staley) another food giant. A large Firestone factory once operated here, as well as others.
